Unwrapping Joy: The Single Gal’s Guide to a Merry Christmas
by Deon Cecile
So! Single with not even a goldfish or single like the lone-sock ranger, which are you?
SINGLE FOR THE SEASON?
And, by single I mean you are unpartnered with no children, not even a goldfish. Yes, that single! Anyway, ignore the goldfish statement for a moment, let’s see what single means. Single, per dictionary definitions, means that you are an individual who is not a part of another person or group; only one in number; not married or in a committed or romantic relationship with someone, etc. In other words, you are like that lone sock in your laundry that has lost its mate.
First and foremost, please know there is nothing wrong with that. Being single, which I believe everybody should be for a period in their life means spending more time with oneself to understand, love, and appreciate oneself more. As Natalie Lue says, and I agree, "If you really are going to be a happy single, you have to stop treating being single as the annoying time that you pass between relationships and embrace it. Rather than focusing on what you lack, focus on what you have: You.” That way you become a better version of yourself for yourself and the next person with whom you share your life.
Nevertheless, have you ever found yourself singing, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey at the top of your lungs, only to be struck by a wave of bittersweet longing? Don't worry, you're not alone! The holiday season can be a real emotional rollercoaster, with a one-way ticket to joy and melancholy, for the single gals. Whether you're dancing through the snow in a winter wonderland or feeling like the Grinch who stole your own Christmas cheer, read on because these are the things you need to do instead of visiting the “Wallowing Tavern.”
LET'S DIVE IN!
No. 1 - Acknowledge and Validate Your Feelings
Picture this: you're sipping hot cocoa, wrapped in a cozy blanket, and watching those classic Christmas movies. Suddenly, you see a happy couple sharing a stolen kiss under the mistletoe, and your heart does a little somersault. It's okay, really it is! We've all been there, or maybe not, but anyway. Those moments can hit harder than a snowball to the face and have your knickers in a bunch real quick. You might even think, "Why can't that be me?" Well, you're not alone in feeling this way. We've all had moments of "Jingle Hell" but remember, your feelings are valid, acknowledge them, appreciate where you are, and find an activity to build a vibe!
No. 2 - Build Your Ultimate Christmas Playlist
It's time to create a playlist that's as fabulous as you are. Start with Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," because, well, that YOU in the song is YOU, until your situation changes of course; and even then, it should remain YOU plus ONE. Next, sprinkle in a little bit of "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt, because sometimes, we need to let Santa know we've been extra good this year, single or not. Follow it up with Britney Spears' "My Only Wish (This Year)," because every girl needs to make their wish known to Santa. Wrap up your list with other songs that tickle your fancy, then buck that stereo, grab a broom, sing out loud, and dance away.
"Being single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with. ~ Carrie Bradshaw
No. 3 - Embrace the Power of “Me Time”
While the world may be buzzing with holiday hustle and bustle, don't forget to gift yourself the luxury of "me time." Set aside moments to unwind, pamper yourself, and indulge in activities that bring you joy. Whether reading your favorite book, enjoying a spa day at home, or simply savoring a cup of hot cocoa, prioritize self-care and relish the peace that comes with it.
“Embrace self-love, and self-discovery, infused with lots of laughter” ~ Deon Cecile
No. 4 - Sparkle in Your Own Light
Christmas is a time of reflection, gratitude, and self-appreciation. Take a moment to recognize your achievements, growth, and the unique qualities that make you shine. Write a letter to yourself, acknowledging your strengths and the challenges you've conquered throughout the year. Celebrate the beautiful person you are, both inside and out.
No. 5 - Craft Your Own Traditions
Who says traditions are reserved for families or couples? As a single female, take this opportunity to create your festive rituals. Take a solo vacation and experience Christmas in other countries, create a “pamper me” list, or treat yourself to a drive along the countryside to breathe in nature and take photos.
“I’m not alone! I’m with myself. And myself is fabulous.” ~Eva Longoria
CHEERS TO YOU, FABULOUS SINGLE GAL!
Here are a few more things you can do to wash away the single-gal holiday melancholy:
Volunteer at your favorite community center or make a charitable donation - a great way to find meaning in the season and connect with others.
Host a "Friendsgiving" celebration with your closest gal pals and have a blast.
Get your bake on and create sweet memories with friends or family.
Get cozy and binge-watch your favorite shows. Netflix or Amazon Prime anyone?
Partying alone isn’t over-rated so slip into your glam attire and hit those holiday soirées with confidence.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, ENJOY YOUR SINGLEDOM!
Your Christmas may not look like a Hallmark movie but it's yours, filled with potential for joy, fun, and unforgettable moments. Savor the magic of the season, one jingle bell at a time, and toast your darn self.
To all my single ladies, may your Christmas be merry, bright, filled with love, laughter, and Mariah Carey hits. Cheers!
